I just read an article on the BBC website which said that based on the results of a survey, the majority of scientists recommended giving up on the Giant Panda. The size of the panda population is obviously very small and, for a long time, scientists and conservationists have been trying to boost their numbers. I don't know if it's being in captivity or something else but they don't seem to want to mate any more.
My response? Good! What thinking person would say "no I think we should spend time, money and effort on keeping a single species of animal alive for just a bit longer"? We don't need pandas. Let them go.
There was a quote on the article from some woman who works for the World Wildlife Fund—guess whose side she was on—which said "1,700 species of animal have had their populations reduced by a third in the last 40 years". Well so what? Do you realise that 99% of all the animals that have ever existed are already extinct? It's called natural selection and let me tell you: it doesn't get any more selective than a group of animals that has opted for abstinence.
That's not to say I think all animals should be left to die. I, for one, don't know what I'd do if pork went away. This makes pigs very important. Pandas though? Fuck 'em. In fact fuck dolphins too. I'm tired of people who try to save these animals. The seal numbers are too low! Rhinoceroses are being killed by ivory hunters! The tiger population is dwindling! Who gives a shit? We've got bigger problems than that. When humanity has to band together to colonise other planets the dolphins and polar bears aren't going to be doing shit to help us. If you can't do maths or labour then you're food.
Speaking of food, do you realise just how many pandas there would be if we were allowed to eat them? About as many as cows and pigs. There might be more condors around if more people wanted one for breakfast. Eating animals creates demand, which gives farmers an incentive to breed them. Why else would we have all these sheep running around? For scenery? It's the same way that using paper creates a demand for more trees to be planted; eating animals gives people more reason to breed them.
Hmm, that's weird. I suddenly feel like going to Subway.
